What is a QR code and how does it work?
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional code that can store a large amount of encrypted information in a very small space. It is more or less an extension of the bar code, but can store more than a hundred times more information due to its more complex structure. Special scanners are no longer needed for this; it can simply be read with the camera of a smartphone or tablet or the appropriate app. This means that the QR code is now accessible to many people and is therefore becoming increasingly popular, especially in marketing.
The QR code is actually quite “old,” having been developed in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave. Originally intended for labeling and tracking components in the logistical supply chain of a major Japanese automaker, it has since been widely used in many other areas. During the literally contactless pandemic, the QR code experienced a real boom and has since become an integral part of the modern information society.
What is the best way to include a QR code?
QR codes are particularly useful in the analog printing sector, as they easily transfer the user from analog to digital media. Of course, the QR code can be printed directly on the flyer, packaging, etc. However, to be flexible and always up-to-date, we recommend printing generated QR codes on stickers. Why? Because you can stick them everywhere quickly, easily and on the fly, and remove (and replace) or stick them if they change. This means you don't have to re-print an entire run of flyers for updates.

A QR code mainly consists of a square matrix of black and white pixels, also known as modules. The information is encoded as binary data and displayed as a pattern of black and white squares in the QR code. Thanks to the special arrangement of pixels with orientation markers, also known as patterns, the QR code can be scanned very quickly from all sides.

What should you keep in mind when placing QR codes?
- Provide a clear and strong color contrast if you deviate from the usual black and white. A red QR code on a pink background will not work well, as the contrast will not be clear enough.
- Make sure the size is right: the more information you want to store, the more complex the pixel matrix becomes. For trouble-free scanning, an information-rich QR code should always be slightly larger.
- Place the QR code so that it is easy to scan and easy to capture with the camera.
- Square QR codes are usually the most common and have some recognition value even from a distance. However, there are also QR codes in other shapes.
